Are you ready to step out of the classroom and into the field? The 2025 LuceSEA Environmental Transition Field School offers a unique, expenses-paid opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in Southeast Asia.

Where: Chiang Mai, Thailand
When: May 24 – June 27, 2025 (exact dates subject to change)
Who: UH Mānoa graduate students interested in socio-environmental issues. No prior language or research experience is required. Students graduating after summer 2025 are eligible.


About the Field School

Join researchers from UH Mānoa and the East-West Center for a five-week program focused on socioeconomic and environmental transitions in rural Southeast Asia. Activities include:

  • Research methods training and proposal development
  • Fieldwork in rural Thailand, exploring agrarian transitions
  • Data analysis and writing workshops
  • Participation in an international symposium on environmental transitions

This program is supported by a grant from the Luce Foundation and hosted by the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development at Chiang Mai University. Participants will collaborate with scholars and students from Southeast Asia in a unique interdisciplinary and cross-cultural setting.

Requirements

Selected students must:

  • Attend four online pre-field school preparation meetings in Spring 2025.
